Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)
What is the primary advantage of a TFSA? The Tax-Free Savings Account is a versatile vehicle where capital gains, dividends, and interest earned are completely exempt from Canadian taxes. Unlike the RRSP, contributions are made with after-tax dollars, meaning you do not get a tax deduction for deposits, but withdrawals are entirely tax-free and do not count as taxable income.
How is the contribution room calculated? Your total room is the sum of the annual limit, any unused room from previous years since you turned 18, and the total amount of withdrawals made in the prior calendar year. For 2024, the government increased the annual limit to $7,000 to account for inflation. Over-contributing results in a penalty of 1% per month on the excess amount.
- ▪ Flexibility: Withdrawals can be made at any time for any purpose without penalty.
- ▪ Re-contribution: Withdrawn amounts are added back to your contribution room the following year.
- ▪ Eligibility: Any Canadian resident age 18 or older with a valid Social Insurance Number.
